Jack Marriott has been one of few bright spots for Reading so far this season, but after he suffered a hamstring injury against Cardiff, we look at potential options up front for the Royals.

After signing from Wrexham for an undisclosed fee in the summer, few expected striker Jack Marriott to hit the ground running quite as quickly as he has for the Royals.

Marriott, 31, has bagged five goals in just seven league appearances for Noel Hunt’s side, despite the club currently sitting 16th in League One.

But, after the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff last weekend, the former Peterborough man picked up a sore hamstring that, according to Noel Hunt, will sideline him for a couple of weeks:

“Jack felt him hamstring on Sunday, he felt fine after the game but woke up sore… we couldn’t risk him tonight – he’ll probably be a doubt for Saturday.”

During Tuesday’s win over Northampton Town, Hunt selected Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan to lead the line but the 22-year-old looked far from convincing.

The Royals also added Mark O’Mahony from Brighton on a season-long loan this summer, however he has found himself out of favour after a poor run of form to start the campaign.

The Royals desperately need one of those two to take a big leap forward during Marriott’s absence.

Despite the fact that the Englishman seems to have avoided a long-term injury, if Hunt doesn’t feel like he can trust either of the two top options to lead the line he would be in a very difficult position should Marriott face an extended spell on the sidelines.
